This standard establishes requirements for procedures for collecting venous and capillary blood samples from patients in inpatient and outpatient settings and is intended for use by medical organizations that collect blood for sending for laboratory testing. The process of drawing blood in an outpatient setting has features in the preparation of the patient, associated with diet, the position of the patient’s body (see Appendix A) and his physical activity before drawing blood. The procedures described in this standard are only applicable when using a closed venous blood collection system (a container system in which the tube cap is not opened during the entire blood collection process). This standard does not provide guidance on blood collection using open systems (needle and syringe).
