2Expert Interpretation

This in-depth analysis of DIN 86015:2018, the standard for the solvent bonding installation of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) pipes for marine applications, covers key technical points such as material selection, installation requirements, thermal expansion compensation, and seal testing, providing professional guidance for marine piping system engineering.

Standard Overview and Revision Background

DIN 86015:2018 is a professional installation standard for unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) piping systems for ships issued by the German Institute for Standardization, replacing the 1991 version. This standard applies to the application, connection and installation of PVC-U pipes connected by solvent bonding on ships. This revision mainly made technical updates to key links such as sewage pipe systems, pipe end pretreatment, pipe clamp spacing, expansion compensation devices, and adapted to the latest design specifications.

Scope of application and material requirements

According to the standard, PVC-U pipes are only allowed to be used in the piping systems and installation locations specified in Table 1:

Type of piping systemPermitted installation locationSpecial requirements
Drinking water pipelineAll permitted areasComply with drinking water standards
Fresh water pipeline (sanitary)Living areaCorrosion resistance requirements
Sanitary seawater pipelineFlushing system, etc.Seawater corrosion resistance
Sewage pipelineToilet, urinal, drainNon-pressure system
Ballast water pipelineInside ballast tankSpecial support requirements

The standard emphasizes that all PVC-U pipes and fittings must comply with the requirements of IMO A.753(18) Guidelines and meet the definition of non-combustible materials in Chapter II-2 of the SOLAS Convention in terms of flammability. Material Transportation and Storage Specifications Pipelines must be transported using appropriate transportation vehicles and loaded and unloaded under the supervision of qualified personnel. During transportation, ensure that the entire length of the pipe is supported (except when transported on pallets) to prevent deflection. Impact loads on pipe components must be avoided, especially when the temperature is below 0°C.

When storing, please note:

  • All pipe components should be protected from internal contamination
  • Avoid external contact with substances that PVC-U is intolerant to (such as solvent-containing paints or asphalt)
  • The pipe stacking height should not exceed 1.5 meters
  • It is preferred to use continuous flat pads for storage or stacking

Technical requirements for solvent bonding process

Joint preparation requirements

Pipe processing requires professionals with knowledge of the corresponding materials. Key factors for bonding quality include:

  • Right-angle cutting, chamfering and deburring pipe ends
  • Appropriate cleaning agent selection
  • Clean bonding surface
  • Appropriate adhesive selection
  • Adhesive application and connection according to the manufacturer's instructions
  • Remove excess adhesive
  • Curing and temperature control

Pipe Outer Diameter (mm)Chamfer Depth (mm)Technical Requirements
10-161-2Slight Chamfer
20-502-3Standard Chamfer
63-1603-6Reinforced Chamfer

Bonding Process Details

The bonding surface must be prepared by degreasing (cleaning) using the cleaning agents and treatment materials recommended by the pipe manufacturer. Only disposable cellulose materials may be used, and a PVC-U-specific solvent-based adhesive approved by the system or pipe manufacturer must be used.

Adhesive application requirements:

  • The bonding surface must be dry before applying the adhesive
  • Use a brush to apply thoroughly and evenly, first applying to the inside of the sleeve and then immediately to the outside of the pipe
  • The brush must be moved in the axial direction
  • Large pipes (outer diameter ≥ 90mm) require two people to apply simultaneously

Pipeline installation and support system

Installation environment requirements

Pipeline installation should be carried out in an environment with a temperature above 5°C and must not be installed in a location where the allowable operating temperature of the outer wall of the pipe (Chapter 6) may be exceeded. The pipeline layout should try to avoid water and air accumulation. If it cannot be avoided, exhaust and emptying measures should be provided.

Pipe clamp support spacing

The pipe clamp spacing depends on the pipe diameter, wall thickness, medium density and operating temperature. Standard Table 5 provides detailed support spacing data:

Pipe outer diameter (mm)20°C spacing (mm)40°C spacing (mm)60°C spacing (mm)
16950850600
50160015001150

Thermal Expansion Compensation Design

Expansion Calculation Requirements

The thermal expansion coefficient of PVC-U pipe is 0.08 mm/m·K, which is much greater than that of metal pipes. Length change calculations must consider:

  • The pipe wall temperature (ambient temperature) at installation
  • The minimum and maximum expected pipe wall temperatures during system operation

Length change calculation formula: ΔL = α × L × ΔT
Where: ΔL - length change (mm); α - thermal expansion coefficient (0.08 mm/m·K); L - pipe length (m); ΔT - temperature difference (K)

Compensation measures

An expansion bend or compensator must be provided between the two fixed points. These can be expansion bends, telescopic compensators, or bellows compensators. During installation, the compensator must be adjusted so that its operating range accommodates length changes caused by operation and ambient temperature.

Because plastic pipes are highly deformable under stress, compensators with minimal deformation must be used. Brackets (guide brackets) must be installed before and after the compensator to prevent lateral buckling.

Tightness Testing Requirements

Pressure Pipe Testing

Pressure testing should be performed at least 24 hours after the last bonding pass. For safety reasons, pressure testing should be performed using an incompressible medium (such as water). The pipe should be pressure-tested for one hour at 1.3 times the permissible working pressure, taking into account the pipe's pressure rating.

Non-Pressure Pipe Testing

Non-Pressure Pipes (gravity drainage systems) must be pressure-tested in accordance with DIN EN ISO 15749-2. The test pressure should be equivalent to the static pressure head at the highest drain connection in the system. Drain piping for vacuum systems should be tested in accordance with DIN EN ISO 15749-3.

Implementation Recommendations and Precautions

Installation Environment Control

The ambient temperature during bonding must be greater than 5°C, and heating should be used if necessary to prevent frost or condensation. Adhesives and cleaning agents contain volatile solvents that are flammable and explosive. Closed spaces must be well ventilated and open flames, sparks, and static electricity are strictly prohibited.

Pipeline protection requirements

Installed PVC-U pipes must not be painted with paints containing solvents or paints that are corrosive to PVC. Pipeline components must be protected from mechanical loads, external heat influences, and direct UV radiation, for example by wrapping or using protective coatings suitable for plastics.

Special working conditions

When the ambient temperature is around 0°C, avoid performing any correction work on metal parts near PVC-U pipes. When the operating ambient temperature is 0°C, insulation or heating measures should be provided to prevent the pipes from rupturing due to freezing.

Analysis of Standard Technology Evolution

Compared to the 1991 edition, DIN 86015:2018 has undergone significant updates on multiple technical levels:

  • Optimized sewage piping system design requirements to meet the sewage treatment needs of modern ships
  • Refined pipe end pretreatment processes to improve the reliability of adhesive connections
  • Improved calculation methods for pipe clamp spacing to account for the effects of different temperatures and medium densities
  • Supplementary provisions for expansion compensation devices to ensure thermal stress relief in piping systems
  • Strengthening pipeline protection requirements to extend pipeline service life

These updates reflect the latest developments in ship piping technology, and in particular, provide more detailed technical guidance on the application of plastic pipes in the special environments of ships.
