This section applies to the classification of the degree of protection of the enclosure of rotating electrical machines. This part specifies the requirements for the protection of the enclosure. The enclosure should meet the use requirements in all aspects, and the material and processing technology of the enclosure should be able to ensure that its performance meets the requirements of this standard under normal use conditions. This standard does not specify: - the degree of protection of motors against mechanical damage or the degree of protection against conditions such as moisture (such as caused by condensation), corrosive gases, molds, insects, etc.; - the type of protection for motors operating in explosive gas atmospheres ; — requirements for barriers placed around enclosures only for personal safety. In some cases (such as agricultural or household appliances), more extensive precautions may be prescribed to avoid accidental or intentional access. This standard specifies the standard levels of protection of enclosures for rotating electrical machines with respect to: a) protection against human access to or access to live parts inside the enclosure and access to rotating parts inside the enclosure (except smooth rotating shafts and similar parts), and protection against the entry of solid foreign objects into the motor ; b) protection against harmful effects caused by the ingress of water into the motor. This part specifies the mark of the degree of protection and the test to check that the motor meets the requirements of this standard.
