This International Standard specifies a method for determining the rate of heat release when a specimen is oriented horizontally and subjected to a controlled level of thermal radiation using an external igniter. The rate of heat release was determined from the oxygen consumption calculated from the oxygen concentration in the combustion product gas stream and the flow rate of the combustion products, and the time to ignition (sustained flaming combustion) of the sample was also measured.
