Scope

This part specifies the application of voltage suppression measures to achieve the requirements in IEC 60364-4-44 "Electrical Installations of Buildings Part 4-44: Protection against Voltage Disturbance and Electromagnetic Interference for Safety Protection", IEC 60664-1 "Equipment in Low Voltage System Insulation coordination Part 1: Principles, requirements and tests", IEC 61312-2 "Lightning Electromagnetic Impulse Protection (LEMP) Part 2: Grounding shielding of buildings, connection grounding inside buildings" and IEC 61643-12 "Low voltage distribution Surge Protective Devices (SPD) for Electrical Systems - Part 12: Performance Requirements and Test Methods" stipulates the insulation coordination requirements. This standard gives the requirements for the selection and installation of surge protective devices (SPDs): - Surge protective devices (SPDs) installed for building electrical installations to limit atmospheric transient overvoltages from power distribution systems and operating overvoltages; - use surge protective devices (SPD) in the case of buildings equipped with lightning protection devices to prevent direct lightning strikes or transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes in the vicinity of buildings. This standard does not include surge protective components that may be incorporated in equipment connected to electrical installations. Elements of this kind may change the characteristics of the main surge arrester of the electrical installation; and additional coordination may be required. This section applies to AC circuits. For d.c. circuits, the requirements of this standard also apply to the extent they apply. In special cases, if other or additional requirements need to be added, they can be specified in the relevant chapters of Part 7 of IEC 60364.
