2Scope / Description
This standard specifies the mechanical, physical, and electrical requirements for newly manufactured residential refueling appliances (RFAs) designed to deliver natural gas directly to a vehicle's natural gas fuel storage system. These requirements apply to appliances that: a) are intended for use with natural gas only (see Section 1.1); b) are intended for indoor or outdoor installations in non-living spaces (e.g., garages); c) are intended for use in ambient temperatures not less than -40°C (-40°F); d) are rated for voltage not exceeding 240 volts AC; e) have a charge pressure not exceeding the specified vehicle working pressure; f) have a maximum inlet flow not exceeding 10 SCFM (17 SCMH); g) are intended for connection to a residential utility gas pipe system in accordance with applicable code requirements; h) are intended to meet the fire safety requirements of an installation in accordance with applicable code requirements; i) are single and dual refueling hose gas compressor packages. All references to "kPa" and "psi" in this standard shall be considered gauge pressure unless otherwise noted. In the event of a conflict between this standard and federal, national, provincial, state, or local requirements, the requirements of the agency having jurisdiction shall take precedence. This standard contains SI (metric) equivalents to English units for the purpose of allowing this standard to be used in SI (metric) units. If both the measurement and the corresponding values of the other unit are given, the value given first shall be considered as a requirement. The corresponding values given may be approximate. If both the measurement and the corresponding values of the other unit are specified as referenced marked requirements, the unit given first or both shall be provided. In this standard, "shall" is used to express requirements, that is, clauses that the user should meet in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express something that is recommended or suggested but not required; "may" is used to express options or something that is allowed by the standard. Notes do not contain requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of notes is to separate explanatory or informative material from the text. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated as normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
