1.1 This document specifies the technical requirements for stationary belt conveyors and systems designed for the continuous transport of loose bulk materials, as defined in terms 3.1 to 3.2.4. The life phases covered by this document include design, installation, operation, maintenance, and cleaning.
1.2 This document does not cover:
(a) use in coal mining or open-cast lignite mining;
(b) use for transporting persons;
(c) floating, dredging, or ship-mounted structures supporting a conveyor;
(d) biological and chemical hazards arising from the handling of foodstuffs or pharmaceuticals;
(e) design of subsidiary structures that are not part of the conveyor;
(f) effects of wind;
(g) hazards arising from the handling of specific dangerous substances (e.g., explosives, radioactive materials);
(h) hazards arising from exposure to or inhalation of harmful liquids, gases, fumes, smoke, or dust;
(i) biological and microbiological hazards (viral or bacterial);
(j) hazards arising from the use of ionizing radiation sources;
(k) conveyors whose conveying means is not a continuous belt with a rubber or polymer surface;
(l) hazards associated with the interconnection of belt conveyors with other machinery.

The safety requirements of this document apply to equipment and systems placed on the market after the publication date of this document.

NOTE: Directive 2014/34/EU, concerning equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, may be applicable to the type of machinery or equipment covered by this European Standard. The purpose of this document is not to provide means for full compliance with the essential health and safety requirements of Directive 2014/34/EU.
