2Scope / Description
This European Standard applies to tunneling machines used for the construction of tunnels, shafts, and other underground excavation work, as defined in Section 3. It addresses all significant hazards, hazardous situations, and hazardous events that apply to these machines when used as intended and under the reasonably foreseeable conditions set by the manufacturer (see Section 4). This European Standard covers the monitoring of hazardous environments in connection with tunneling machines. Hand-arm and whole-body vibration are not considered significant hazards in connection with tunneling machines. The following parts and applications are not covered by this European Standard: the additional requirements for the use of tunneling machines under overpressure conditions; the additional requirements for the use of tunneling machines in potentially explosive atmospheres; auxiliary tools and equipment that are not integral parts of tunneling machines but are used on or in the machine; supply lines (e.g., power supply, water, pipes, compressed air, etc.) for the tunneling machine. Loading and transport equipment that is not an integral part of the tunnel boring machine, e.g., personnel transport wagons, locomotives, mortar wagons, wagons for transporting tunnel segments and excavated material, and shaft hoisting systems. This European Standard does not apply to partial-face tunnel boring machines, continuous miners, and impact machines. This European Standard does not apply to tunnel boring machines manufactured before the date of publication of this European Standard by CEN.
