2Scope / Description
This document defines the technical requirements and tolerances for the acceptance of ballasted track works carried out on:— straight track sections;— switches and crossings; and— rail expansion joints on standard gauge (1435 mm) and wider gauge tracks. Ballasted track works, hereinafter referred to as track works, include the construction of new tracks, the renewal of existing track infrastructure, and maintenance activities. This document sets out requirements pertaining to earthwork, track geometry, absolute track position, the operating parameters of track machinery, track components, ballast cross-sections, construction gauge, rail stress relief operations, measurement procedures for switches, crossings and rail expansion joints, measurement systems, acceptance validation and controls. It also specifies responsibilities and documentation requirements associated with track work acceptance. In addition, this document mandates that all track materials comply with the client-specified relevant acceptance criteria and with the specifications provided by the supplier. This document does not cover work involving rail head re-profiling or associated measurements, except for certain measurements related to safety assurance, as these are covered under other parts of the EN 13231 series of standards. Reconstruction work on platforms and railway level crossings is outside the scope of this document. Furthermore, this document does not apply to urban rail transit systems or to ballastless track infrastructure.
