2Scope / Description
ISO 9712 specifies the qualification and certification requirements for personnel performing industrial non-destructive testing (NDT). Because the effectiveness of any NDT application depends on the capabilities of the individuals conducting the tests, this standard establishes a procedure for assessing and documenting their competence, which presupposes the requisite theoretical and practical knowledge for their specific, defined, directed, supervised, or evaluable NDT tasks. The need for an international standard arises from the global comparability of diverse industrial applications, which demands a unified approach to NDT. The standard sets out requirements for the following methods: a) acoustic emission testing; b) eddy current testing; c) leak testing (excluding hydraulic pressure testing); d) magnetic particle testing; e) penetrant testing; f) radiographic testing; g) tensile testing; h) thermographic testing; i) ultrasonic testing; j) visual examination (excluding direct visual inspection performed with the naked eye). In Europe, this international standard has been adopted without modification as EN ISO 9712:2022.
