2Scope / Description
This document provides guidance on defining the scope for implementing the ISO/IEC 20000-1 standard and on applying the specific requirements of the standard to an organization. It assists in determining whether ISO/IEC 20000-1 is applicable to the organization's context. The document illustrates how to define the scope of an IT service management system (SMS), regardless of whether the organization has prior experience in defining the scope of other management systems. The guidance herein can support an organization in planning and preparing for an ISO/IEC 20000-1 conformity assessment. Annex A includes example statements of SMS scope, illustrating a range of scenarios from simple to complex service delivery chains. This document may be used by personnel responsible for planning SMS implementation, as well as by auditors and consultants. It complements the guidance on SMS implementation provided in ISO/IEC 20000-2. Requirements for bodies offering SMS audit and certification services can be found in ISO/IEC 20000-6, which recommends the use of this document.
