2Scope / Description

4 Requirements
The requirements for identifying golden-threaded rosewood must comply with the specifications in Table 1.
Table 1 Golden-Threaded Rosewood Identification Elements
Item Major characteristics
Family, Genus Lauraceae (Lauraceae) Phoebe (Phoebe)
Heartwood and Sapwood Color Yellow-brown, light yellow-brown, yellow-green; no significant difference between heartwood and sapwood colors
Luster Golden thread-like luster on the longitudinal section of the wood
Odor Distinctive fragrance of rosewood in freshly cut wood
Density ≥0.55 g/cm3 when air-dried
Pores Densely porous wood with visible vessels; mainly single-vessel and short radial multiples (usually 2-3) with few vessel clusters; intervascular pits arranged in a reticulate pattern
Axial parenchyma Predominantly annular or sparse annular, with oil cells present
Ray Cells Non-overlapping; anomocytic type III or II, multi-row rays 2-3 cells wide; oil cells are present

5 Inspection Equipment
5.1 Sampling Tools
Saw, chisel, knife, growth cone, etc.
5.2 Preparation Devices
Beaker, culture dish, single-sided blade, disposable microtome blade, scalpel, dissecting needle, forceps, brush, slide glass, cover slip, etc.
5.3 Reagents
Safranin, alcohol, xylene, neutral resin glue, etc.
5.4 Equipment
Slide cutting machine with sliding mechanism, optical microscope, electric furnace, balance, drying oven, etc.

6 Inspection Methods
6.1 Wood Structural Features
6.1.1 Sampling
Take samples from the specimen, with dimensions no less than 20mm x 20mm x 20mm. If this requirement cannot be met, sample dimensions should meet testing requirements (no less than 5mm x 5mm x 5mm). The cross-sectional surface, radial surface, and tangential surface of the specimen must be mutually perpendicular.
6.1.2 Preparation
Prepare samples according to the regulations in GB/T 29894, including softening, sectioning, staining, dehydration, clearing, and sealing.
6.1.3 Observation
Use an optical microscope to observe microscopic structural features such as vessels, axial parenchyma, and rays on the cross-sectional, radial, and tangential surfaces of the wood.

6.2 Color
Observe the color of the wood in natural light by visual inspection.

6.3 Golden thread-like luster
Sand the longitudinal section of the wood with sandpaper (400 Cw or above), then moisten its surface with water. Under illumination from a flashlight, observe the longitudinal section for point and line-like yellow bright luster.

6.4 Odor
Determine by olfactory inspection using freshly cut sections of the wood.

6.5 Density when air-dried
Measure according to GB/T 1927.5. If the dimensions of the wood sample do not meet the requirements in GB/T 1927.5, the sampling size should be no less than 5mm x 5mm x 5mm. For irregularly shaped samples, volume can be measured using the water displacement method.

7 Determination
If the inspection results comply with the specifications in Table 1 of this document, the wood is determined to be golden-threaded rosewood.
