2Scope / Description
This part of ISO 12217 specifies the procedures for assessing the stability and buoyancy of intact (i.e., undamaged) small boats. It also covers the buoyancy characteristics of small boats susceptible to sinking. Assessing stability and buoyancy characteristics according to this part of ISO 12217 allows a small boat to be assigned to a design category (C or D) appropriate to its design and maximum load. This part of ISO 12217 applies to small boats less than 6 meters in length that are powered by human or engine, excluding habitable multihull sailboats. Small boats less than 6 meters in length but fully enclosed and equipped with a quick-drainage cover as specified in ISO 11812 may alternatively be assessed according to ISO 12217-1 (non-sailboats) or ISO 12217-2 (sailboats), and may thus be assigned to a higher design category. For habitable multihull boats, this part of ISO 12217 includes the assessment of capsizing hazard, the definition of feasible escape routes, and buoyancy requirements in a capsized (keel-up) state.
