2Scope / Description
This standard specifies requirements and guidance for the inherently safe design, protective measures and information for the use of personal care robots, in particular the following three types of personal care robots: mobile servant robots, physical assistance robots and personnel transport robots. These robots typically perform tasks to improve the quality of life of the intended user, regardless of age or ability. This standard describes the hazards associated with the use of these robots and provides requirements to eliminate or reduce the risks associated with these hazards to an acceptable level. This standard covers human-machine physical contact applications. This standard presents important hazards and describes how to deal with them for each type of personal care robot. This standard applies to robotic devices used in personal care applications, which are considered personal care robots. This standard is limited to ground robots. This standard does not apply to: robots with speeds exceeding 20 km/h; robotic toys; aquatic robots and flying robots; industrial robots (covered by ISO 10218); robots as medical devices; robots for military or public force applications. The scope of this standard is primarily limited to hazards related to human care, but includes domestic animals or property (defined as safety-related objects) where appropriate, provided that the personal care robot is properly installed, maintained and used for its intended purpose or in reasonably foreseeable circumstances. This standard does not apply to robots manufactured before its publication date. This standard addresses all significant hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events described in Annex A.
