2Scope / Description

This International Standard covers the safety of electrically powered or electromagnetically powered: hand-held tools; portable tools; lawn and garden machinery. The groups listed above are hereinafter referred to as "power tools" or "machines". The rated voltage is up to 250 V for single-phase AC or DC tools and up to 480 V for three-phase AC tools. The rated input is not more than 3700 W. The limit values applicable to battery-powered power tools for the applicability of this standard are specified in sections K.1 and L.1. This standard applies to the hazards posed by power tools to which all persons are exposed during the intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse of the power tools. Power tools with electric heating elements are included in the scope of this standard. Requirements for motors that are not insulated from the power supply and have basic insulation not rated for the rated voltage of the power tools are described in Annex B. Requirements for battery-powered, electromechanically or magnetically driven tools and battery packs for such tools are specified in Annex K. Requirements for such tools that are operated and/or charged directly from the mains or a non-isolated power supply are specified in Annex L. Hand-held power tools that can be mounted in a holder or mounting device and used as stationary power tools without modification of the tool itself fall within the scope of this standard. Such a combination of hand-held power tool and holder is considered a portable power tool and is therefore covered by the applicable Part 3.
