2Scope / Description
This specification applies to plugs and coupling sockets used solely for AC power, with or without protective contacts, rated voltage exceeding 50 V but not exceeding 440 V, and rated current not exceeding 32 A, for domestic or similar applications, whether indoors or outdoors. This specification also applies to plugs in equipment connection cords, and plugs and coupling sockets in extension cords. It applies to plugs that form part of equipment, unless otherwise specified in the relevant equipment specification, and also to plugs and coupling sockets used in harsh conditions, and socket devices equipped with equipment protection fuses according to the DIN EN 60127 (VDE 0820) series. This specification does not apply to: plugs and coupling sockets for industrial purposes; equipment plugs and sockets; plugs and coupling sockets for ELV (Extra Low Safety Voltage); equipment connection cords; cable reels; flat, non-reconnectable two-prong plugs (2.5 A, 250 V). Plugs or coupling sockets conforming to this specification are suitable for environments where the ambient temperature generally does not exceed 25°C, but occasionally reaches 35°C.
