This European Standard addresses the safety of electrical liquid heating appliances intended for household and similar use, where the rated voltage does not exceed 250 V. Appliances used by laypersons in shops and other places with typical household applications fall within the scope of this standard. Where applicable, this standard addresses the general hazards posed by appliances to which all persons in households and similar environments are exposed. This standard generally does not consider children playing with the appliances or their use by very young children. It does not consider the use by children of the following appliances: pressure cookers, bain-marie pots, feed steamers, sterilizers, soy milk makers, and laundry kettles. It does not consider the use by young children without supervision of the following appliances: saucepans, slow cookers, pressure cookers, tea makers, rice cookers, coffee makers, kettles, egg cookers, and milk cookers. This standard does not apply to: frying pans and deep fryers, hot water storage tanks and boilers, instantaneous water heaters, surface cleaning equipment using liquids or steam, portable immersion heaters, dispensing machines and vending machines for commercial use, medical devices, equipment intended exclusively for industrial purposes, equipment intended for use in rooms where special conditions prevail, such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres, high-frequency heaters, pressure sterilizers, domestic humidifiers and similar devices.
