This part of GB/T18802 applies to surge protective devices (SPDs) that protect against the indirect and direct effects of lightning or other transient overvoltage surges. These SPDs will be connected to the DC side of photovoltaic systems with a rated voltage not exceeding 1500V. These SPDs contain at least one non-linear component to limit voltage and discharge surge current. This part specifies the performance characteristics, safety requirements, standard test methods and ratings of these appliances. SPDs complying with this standard are only designed to be installed on the DC side of photovoltaic systems and the DC side of inverters. SPDs used for energy storage photovoltaic systems (such as batteries, capacitor banks) are not included in this section. SPDs with special series impedances between separate input and output terminals (so-called two-port SPDs in IEC 6164311:2011) are currently not covered by this standard.
