This document applies to rear-loading refuse collection vehicles (RCVs), as defined in 3.2. This document addresses all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events of rear-loading RCVs, as defined in clause 4, during their intended use and under conditions of misuse that are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer. This document applies to the design and construction of rear-loading RCVs to ensure that they are fit for their function and can be operated, adjusted and maintained throughout their life. It does not apply to the scrapping of rear-loading RCVs. This document describes and defines the safety requirements for rear-loading RCVs, excluding the interface with lifting gear, tailgate/unloading door and lifting gear, as shown in Figure A.1. The safety requirements for lifting gear and the interface with tailgate/unloading door are defined in prEN 1501-5. The safety requirements for loading cranes are defined in EN 12999. This European Standard does not apply to machines that: operate under severe conditions, such as extreme environmental conditions; operate in potentially explosive atmospheres; handle loads that could result in hazardous situations; operate on board ships. This document does not apply to machines manufactured before the publication of this document by CEN.
